[892] Therein, what is the conceit (māna) of one who is inferior, [thinking] "I am superior"? Here someone is inferior by birth (jāti), or by clan, or by family standing, … On one or another ground he regards himself as superior to others. Depending on that, he gives rise to conceit. That which is conceit of such a kind — conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, self-exaltation, flaunting (oneself like) a banner, hoisting (oneself) up, the desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called the conceit of one who is inferior, [thinking] "I am superior."
