[893] Therein, what is the conceit (māna) "I am equal" on the part of one who is inferior? Here someone is inferior by birth, or by clan, or by family standing, … by one or another ground he regards himself as equal with others. Depending on that, he gives rise to conceit. Any such conceit, conceiving, state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, flaunting a flag, self-elevation, desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called the conceit "I am equal" on the part of one who is inferior.
