[910] Therein, what is envy (issā)? That which, with regard to the gain, honor, respect, esteem, salutation, and veneration of others, is envy, the act of envying, the state of enviousness, jealousy, the act of being jealous, the state of jealousy — this is called envy.
Therein, what is stinginess (macchariya)? Five kinds of stinginess: stinginess as to dwelling (āvāsa-macchariya), stinginess as to family (kula-macchariya), stinginess as to gain (lābha-macchariya), stinginess as to praise (vaṇṇa-macchariya), stinginess as to Dhamma (dhamma-macchariya). That which is of such a kind — stinginess, the act of being stingy, the state of stinginess, avarice, miserliness, tight-fistedness, want of generosity of mind — this is called stinginess.
