[911] Therein, what is deceit (māyā)?
Here someone, having engaged in misconduct (duccarita) by body, having engaged in misconduct by speech, having engaged in misconduct by mind, forms an evil wish for the purpose of concealing it: he wishes thus, "May no one find me out"; he intends thus, "May no one find me out"; he utters speech thus, "May no one find me out"; he strives with the body thus, "May no one find me out." Whatever of such a kind is deceit, deceitfulness, beguiling, deceiving, defrauding, dissembling, evasion, hiding, hiding away, covering, covering over, not making plain, not making manifest, complete covering-up, and evil-doing — this is called deceit.
Therein, what is hypocrisy (sāṭheyya)?
Here someone is a hypocrite, a thorough hypocrite. Whatever therein is guile, guilefulness, hypocrisy, harshness, hardness, craftiness, and artfulness — this is called hypocrisy.
