[1115] S. In dependence on the eye (cakkhu) and space (ākāsa), eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa) arises? P. Yes. S. Is there indeed a discourse (suttanta) [that says], "In dependence on the eye and space, eye-consciousness arises"? P. There is not. S. Is there indeed a discourse [that says], "In dependence on the eye and forms (rūpa), eye-consciousness arises"? P. Yes. S. If there is indeed a discourse [that says], "In dependence on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises," then surely, good sir, it should not be said, "In dependence on the eye and space, eye-consciousness arises."
