[1156] P. Is it not to be said: "They subsist there on what is given from here"?
S. Yes.
P. But was it not said by the Blessed One:
"Just as water rained upon the high ground flows down to the low,
even so does what is given from here accrue to the departed (petā);
just as the brimming rivers fill up the ocean,
even so does what is given from here accrue to the departed.
For there is no plowing there, no herding of cattle is found there,
no trading such as here, no buying and selling with gold —
the departed, those who have died, subsist there on what is given from here" [1] —
is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?
S. Yes.
P. Then indeed they do subsist there on what is given from here.
