[1157] [Paravādin:] It should not be said that "they subsist there by what is given from here"?
[Sakavādin:] Yes.
[Paravādin:] But was it not said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, considering these five grounds (ṭhāna), mother and father wish for a son to be born in the family. Which five? 'Supported by us, he will support us; or he will do work for us; the family line will last long; he will take up the inheritance;¹ or else he will duly present the offering (dakkhiṇā) for us when we are departed (petā) and have passed away.' Bhikkhus, it is considering these five grounds that mother and father wish for a son to be born in the family.
Considering five grounds, the wise wish for a son:
"Supported by us, he will support us, or he will do work for us;
may the family line long endure; he will take up the inheritance;²
or else he will duly present the offering for the departed."
Considering these grounds, the wise wish for a son.
Therefore the good, true persons (sappurisā), grateful and thankful,
support their mother and father, recalling what was done for them before;
they perform duties for them, as is due to those previous benefactors (pubbakārī);
heeding counsel, supporting those who reared him, not letting the family line lapse,
endowed with faith (saddhā) and accomplished in virtue (sīla), such a son is worthy of praise."³
— Is there indeed such a Suttanta?
[Sakavādin:] Yes.
[Paravādin:] Well then, they do subsist there by what is given from here.
