[1388] [Sakavādin:] Is it not the case that the five consciousnesses (pañcaviññāṇā) have pre-arisen (purejāta) bases (vatthu) and pre-arisen objects (ārammaṇa); have internal bases and external objects; have unbroken (asambhinna) bases and unbroken objects; have diverse bases and diverse objects; that they do not experience one another's field and range (gocara-visaya); that they do not arise without adverting (samannāhāra); that they do not arise without attention (manasikāra); that they do not arise uninterspersed; that they do not arise neither before nor after one another; that they do not arise in immediate succession to one another? … Is it not the case that the five consciousnesses are without engagement (anābhoga)?
[Paravādin:] Yes.
[Sakavādin:] If the five consciousnesses are without engagement, then indeed, good sir, it should not be said: "For one endowed with the five consciousnesses (pañcaviññāṇasamaṅgī) there is development of the path (maggabhāvanā)."
