[1389] "For one endowed with eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa), is there development of the path (maggabhāvanā)?" — "Yes." "Does eye-consciousness arise with reference to emptiness (suññatā)?" — "It should not be said thus." … "Does eye-consciousness arise with reference to emptiness?" — "Yes." "Does eye-consciousness arise dependent on the eye (cakkhu) and emptiness?" — "It should not be said thus." … "Does eye-consciousness arise dependent on the eye and emptiness?" — "Yes." "Is there indeed a discourse (suttanta) [that says]: 'Dependent on the eye and emptiness, eye-consciousness arises'?" — "There is not." "Is there indeed a discourse [that says]: 'Dependent on the eye and forms (rūpa), eye-consciousness arises'?" — "Yes." "If there is indeed a discourse [that says]: 'Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises,' then truly it should not be said: 'Dependent on the eye and emptiness, eye-consciousness arises.'"
