[1529] Sakavādin: One who has attained (samāpanna) relishes [it]; delight in jhāna (jhāna-nikanti) has jhāna as its object (ārammaṇa)? Paravādin: Yes. S.: Is that jhāna the object of that very jhāna? P.: It should not be said thus. … S.: Is that jhāna the object of that very jhāna? P.: Yes. S.: Does one touch that contact (phassa) with that very contact, feel that feeling (vedanā) with that very feeling, perceive that perception (saññā) with that very perception, will that volition (cetanā) with that very volition, think that mind (citta) with that very mind, think that thought (vitakka) with that very thought, examine that examination (vicāra) with that very examination, cherish that rapture (pīti) with that very rapture, recollect that mindfulness (sati) with that very mindfulness, and understand that wisdom (paññā) with that very wisdom? P.: It should not be said thus. … S.: Delight in jhāna is associated with mind (citta-sampayutta), and jhāna is associated with mind? P.: Yes. S.: Is there then a conjunction (samodhāna) of two contacts … of two minds? P.: It should not be said thus. … S.: Delight in jhāna is unwholesome (akusala), and jhāna is wholesome (kusala)? P.: Yes. S.: Do wholesome and unwholesome phenomena (dhammā), blameworthy and blameless, inferior and superior, dark and bright each with its counterpart, come face to face? P.: It should not be said thus. … S.: Do wholesome and unwholesome phenomena, blameworthy and blameless, inferior and superior, dark and bright each with its counterpart, come face to face? P.: Yes. S.: Was it not said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, these four are far apart, exceedingly far apart. Which four? The sky, bhikkhus, and the earth — this is the first that is far apart, exceedingly far apart … Therefore the Dhamma of the good is far from the bad" — does such a discourse (suttanta) indeed exist? P.: Yes. S.: Then indeed it should not be said that wholesome and unwholesome phenomena, blameworthy and blameless, inferior and superior, dark and bright each with its counterpart, come face to face.
