[1544] S. Is craving for forms (rūpataṇhā) the origin of suffering (dukkhasamudaya)? P. Yes. S. Is craving for dhammas (dhammataṇhā) the origin of suffering? P. It should not be said so. … S. Is craving for sounds (saddataṇhā) … craving for odours (gandhataṇhā) … craving for tastes (rasataṇhā) … craving for tangible objects (phoṭṭhabbataṇhā) the origin of suffering? P. Yes. S. Is craving for dhammas the origin of suffering? P. It should not be said so. … S. Is craving for dhammas not the origin of suffering? P. Yes. S. Was it not said by the Blessed One that craving (taṇhā) is the origin of suffering? P. Yes. S. If it was said by the Blessed One that craving is the origin of suffering, then indeed, good sir, it should not be said that craving for dhammas is not the origin of suffering.
