[1556] [P.] Is it not to be said: "The unwholesome root (akusala-mūla) links on to the wholesome root (kusala-mūla); the wholesome root links on to the unwholesome root"?
[S.] Yes.
[P.] Is it not the case that toward whatever object (vatthu) one is attached, toward that very object one becomes dispassionate; and toward whatever object one becomes dispassionate, toward that very object one is attached?
[S.] Yes.
[P.] If toward whatever object one is attached, toward that very object one becomes dispassionate, and toward whatever object one becomes dispassionate, toward that very object one is attached, then indeed, sir, it must be said: "The unwholesome root links on to the wholesome root; the wholesome root links on to the unwholesome root."
