[1582] S. Does lust for the formless (arūparāga) lie latent in the formless element (arūpadhātu), and is it included in the formless element?
P. Yes.
S. Is it something that seeks attainment (samāpatti), something that seeks rebirth (upapatti), a pleasant abiding in this very life; is it accompanied by, arisen together with, conjoined with, and associated with the mind (citta) that seeks attainment, the mind that seeks rebirth, and the mind that is a pleasant abiding in this very life — having one arising, one cessation, one basis, and one object with them?
P. It should not be said thus. …
S. Is it not the case that it is not something that seeks attainment, not something that seeks rebirth, not a pleasant abiding in this very life, not with the mind that seeks attainment … having one object?
P. Yes.
S. If it is not something that seeks attainment, not something that seeks rebirth, … having one object, then indeed it should not be said: "Lust for the formless lies latent in the formless element, and is included in the formless element."
