[1612] [S.] Clinging (upādāna) arises only with craving (taṇhā) as condition (paccaya); it should not be said, "Craving also arises with clinging as condition" — is that so? [P.] Yes. [S.] But is not craving conascent (sahajāta) with clinging? [P.] Yes. [S.] If craving is conascent with clinging, then indeed, good sir, it should be said, "Clinging arises also with craving as condition; craving also arises with clinging as condition."
