[25] "…And the eye faculty (cakkhundriya) is apprehended (upalabbhati) in the sense of a real and ultimate fact (sacchikaṭṭhaparamaṭṭha)? …
…And the ear faculty (sotindriya) is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact? …
…And the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge (aññātāvindriya) is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact? … Yet the person (puggala) is not apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact?"
"Yes."
"It was said by the Blessed One, 'There is a person who practices for his own welfare,' and the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact?"
"Yes."
"Is the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge one thing, and the person another?"
"It should not be said so."
"Acknowledge the rejoinder (paṭikamma): If it was said by the Blessed One, 'There is a person who practices for his own welfare,' and the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact, then indeed, good sir, it should be said that the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is one thing and the person another. What you affirm there — namely, that it should indeed be said, 'It was said by the Blessed One, "There is a person who practices for his own welfare," and the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact,' but that it should not be said, 'The faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is one thing and the person another' — is wrong. But if it should not be said, 'The faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is one thing and the person another,' then indeed, good sir, it should not be said, 'It was said by the Blessed One, "There is a person who practices for his own welfare," and the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact.' What you affirm there — namely, that it should indeed be said, 'It was said by the Blessed One, "There is a person who practices for his own welfare," and the faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact,' but that it should not be said, 'The faculty of one endowed with final knowledge is one thing and the person another' — is wrong. …"
