Does an ordinary person (puthujjana) who is devoid of lust for sensual pleasures (kāmesu vītarāgo) become established in the fruition of non-returning (anāgāmi-phala) together with the breakthrough to the Dhamma (dhammābhisamaya)? P. Yes. S. By the path of stream-entry (sotāpatti-magga)? P. It should not be said thus. … S. By the path of once-returning (sakadāgāmi-magga)? P. It should not be said thus. S. By which path? P. By the path of non-returning (anāgāmi-magga). S. Does he abandon personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchā), and adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa) by the path of non-returning? P. It should not be said thus. … S. Does he abandon personality-view, doubt, and adherence to rules and rituals by the path of non-returning? P. Yes. S. Was not the fruition of stream-entry (sotāpatti-phala) declared by the Blessed One to be through the abandonment of the three fetters (saṃyojana)? P. Yes. S. If the fruition of stream-entry was declared by the Blessed One to be through the abandonment of the three fetters, then indeed it should not be said that he abandons personality-view, doubt, and adherence to rules and rituals by the path of non-returning. … S. Does he abandon gross sensual lust (kāmarāga) and gross ill will (byāpāda) by the path of non-returning? P. It should not be said thus. … S. Does he abandon gross sensual lust and gross ill will by the path of non-returning? P. Yes. S. Was not the fruition of once-returning (sakadāgāmi-phala) declared by the Blessed One to be through the attenuation of sensual lust and ill will? P. Yes. S. If the fruition of once-returning was declared by the Blessed One to be through the attenuation of sensual lust and ill will, then indeed it should not be said that he abandons gross sensual lust and gross ill will by the path of non-returning.
