[616] S. Is there vocal utterance (vacībheda) for one who has attained (samāpanna)? P. Yes. S. Is there not indeed a sutta [that says]: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, speech has ceased"?¹ P. Yes. S. If there is indeed a sutta [that says]: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, speech has ceased," then truly, sir, it should not be said: "There is vocal utterance for one who has attained." ¹ SN Saḷāyatana-vagga 268 (Siam Raṭṭha edition footnote).
