[618] S. "For one who has attained the first jhāna, speech has ceased" — such a discourse (suttanta) does indeed exist; and yet does he have vocal utterance (vacībheda)?
P. Yes.
S. "For one who has attained the third jhāna, rapture (pīti) has ceased … for one who has attained the fourth jhāna, in-breaths and out-breaths have ceased; for one who has attained the sphere of infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana), perception of form (rūpasaññā) has ceased; for one who has attained the sphere of infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), the perception of the sphere of infinity of space has ceased; for one who has attained the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana), the perception of the sphere of infinity of consciousness has ceased … for one who has attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana), the perception of the sphere of nothingness has ceased; for one who has attained the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodha), perception (saññā) and feeling (vedanā) have ceased" — such a discourse does indeed exist; and yet does he have perception and feeling?
