[836] [Sakavādin:] Is there among the devas abstinence (veramaṇī) from the destruction of life (pāṇātipāta), and is there no destruction of life there? [Paravādin:] Yes. [Sakavādin:] Is there among human beings abstinence from the destruction of life, and is there no destruction of life there? [Paravādin:] It should not be said thus. … [Sakavādin:] Is there among the devas abstinence from intoxicants—liquor and fermented drink—that are a basis for heedlessness (surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāna), and is there no [indulging in] intoxicants—liquor and fermented drink—that are a basis for heedlessness there? [Paravādin:] Yes. [Sakavādin:] Is there among human beings abstinence from intoxicants—liquor and fermented drink—that are a basis for heedlessness, and is there no [indulging in] intoxicants—liquor and fermented drink—that are a basis for heedlessness there?
