Abhidhammapiṭaka · Kathāvatthu · Vol. 37 · Section 869

[869] [Sakavādin:] Can a householder (gihī) be an Arahant (arahā)? [Paravādin:] Yes. [Sakavādin:] Is there any householder who, without having abandoned the fetter of householdership (gihisaññojana), makes an end of suffering (dukkha) in this very life? [Paravādin:] There is not. [Sakavādin:] If there is no householder who, without having abandoned the fetter of householdership, makes an end of suffering in this very life, then indeed, sir, it should not be said: "A householder can be an Arahant."
