Abhidhammapiṭaka · Kathāvatthu · Vol. 37 · Section 868

[868] Sakavādin: Could a householder (gihī) be an arahant (arahā)? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: Is it not the case that for the arahant the householder's fetter (gihisaññojana) has been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, made non-existent, of a nature not to arise in the future? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: If for the arahant the householder's fetter has been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, made non-existent, of a nature not to arise in the future, then indeed you should not say, "A householder could be an arahant."
