[870] S. Could a householder be an arahant (arahā)?
P. Yes.
S. Did not the wanderer (paribbājaka) Vacchagotta say this to the Blessed One: "Is there, Master Gotama, any householder who, without having abandoned the householder's fetter (gihisaṃyojana), with the breakup of the body makes an end of suffering (dukkha)?" [and was he not answered:] "Vaccha, there is no householder who, without having abandoned the householder's fetter, with the breakup of the body makes an end of suffering"—and does such a discourse (suttanta) indeed exist?
P. Yes.
S. Well then, it should not be said, "A householder could be an arahant."
