[983] [Sakavādin:] "The Bodhisatta had entered the fixed course [of rightness] (okkanta-niyāma) and had lived the holy life (brahmacariya) in the dispensation (pāvacana) of the Blessed One Kassapa?"
[Paravādin:] "Yes."
[Sakavādin:] "But was it not said by the Blessed One:
'Conqueror of all, knower of all am I,
amid all phenomena (dhammā) unsullied,
having given up all, liberated in the destruction of craving (taṇhā);
having directly known [it] by myself, whom should I point to [as teacher]?
I have no teacher;
my equal is not found;
in the world with its devas
there is no counterpart to me.
For I am the Arahant in the world;
I am the teacher unsurpassed;
I alone am a Fully Self-Enlightened One (sammāsambuddha);
grown cool am I, quenched (nibbuta).
To set rolling the Wheel of Dhamma (dhammacakka)
I go to the city of the Kāsis;
in a world become blind
I shall beat the drum of the Deathless (amata).'
'[Upaka:] Friend, according to what you claim, you ought to be the Infinite Victor (Anantajina).'
'[The Blessed One:] Victors (jinā) indeed are such as I,
who have attained the destruction of the taints (āsava);
evil phenomena have been vanquished by me —
therefore, Upaka, I am a victor.'
— is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?"
[Paravādin:] "Yes."
[Sakavādin:] "Then indeed it should not be said that the Bodhisatta had entered the fixed course [of rightness] and had lived the holy life in the dispensation of the Blessed One Kassapa."
