[984] S. The Bodhisatta had entered the fixed course (niyāma) and had lived the holy life (brahmacariya) in the dispensation (pāvacana) of the Blessed One Kassapa?
P. Yes.
S. But was it not said by the Blessed One: "'This is the noble truth (ariyasacca) of suffering (dukkha)' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, in regard to things (dhammā) not heard before, vision (cakkhu) arose, knowledge (ñāṇa) arose, wisdom (paññā) arose, true knowledge (vijjā) arose, light (āloka) arose. 'Now this noble truth of suffering is to be fully understood' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'It has been fully understood' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, in regard to things not heard before, vision arose … light arose. 'This is the noble truth of the origin (samudaya) of suffering' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'Now this noble truth of the origin of suffering is to be abandoned' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'It has been abandoned' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'This is the noble truth of the cessation (nirodha) of suffering' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'Now this noble truth of the cessation of suffering is to be realized' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'It has been realized' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'This is the noble truth of the way of practice (paṭipadā) leading to the cessation of suffering' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'Now this noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering is to be developed' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, … 'It has been developed' — thus, bhikkhus, for me, in regard to things not heard before, vision arose, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose"?¹ Does such a discourse (suttanta) indeed exist?
P. Yes.
S. If so, then it should not be said that the Bodhisatta entered the fixed course and lived the holy life in the dispensation of the Blessed One Kassapa.
