[1248] In whomever and wherever the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya) lies latent, does the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya) lie latent in him there?
For the ordinary person (puthujjana), in the three feelings (vedanā) in the sense-sphere element (kāmadhātu): the latent tendency of doubt lies latent in him there, but the latent tendency of lust for existence does not lie latent in him there. For that same person, in the form element (rūpadhātu) and in the formless element (arūpadhātu): in him there both the latent tendency of doubt lies latent and the latent tendency of lust for existence lies latent.
Or rather, in whomever and wherever the latent tendency of lust for existence lies latent, does the latent tendency of doubt lie latent in him there?
For three persons, in the form element and in the formless element: the latent tendency of lust for existence lies latent in them there, but the latent tendency of doubt does not lie latent in them there. For the ordinary person, in the form element and in the formless element: in him there both the latent tendency of lust for existence lies latent and the latent tendency of doubt lies latent.
In whomever and wherever the latent tendency of doubt lies latent, does the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya) lie latent in him there?
Yes.
Or rather, in whomever and wherever the latent tendency of ignorance lies latent, does the latent tendency of doubt lie latent in him there?
For three persons, in the three feelings in the sense-sphere element, in the form element, and in the formless element: the latent tendency of ignorance lies latent in them there, but the latent tendency of doubt does not lie latent in them there. For the ordinary person, in the three feelings in the sense-sphere element, in the form element, and in the formless element: in him there both the latent tendency of ignorance lies latent and the latent tendency of doubt lies latent.
