[423] For whomever, wherever, the nose base (ghānāyatana) arises — did the mind base (manāyatana) arise for that one there? Yes (āmantā). Or rather: for whomever, wherever, the mind base arose — does the nose base arise for that one there? For those passing away from the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), for those without a nose (aghānaka) who are being reborn into the sense sphere, for beings of the form sphere (rūpāvacara), and for beings of the formless sphere (arūpāvacara): for these, there, the mind base arose, but the nose base does not arise for them there. For those possessing a nose who are being reborn: for these, there, both the mind base arose and the nose base arises.
