[114] Now at that time the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan had two novices (sāmaṇera), Kaṇṭaka and Mahaka. They defiled one another. Bhikkhus took offense, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can novices engage in such improper conduct?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Bhikkhus, two novices should not be taken to attend upon oneself by a single bhikkhu. Whoever should have them attend commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
