[120] Then it occurred to the novices (sāmaṇera): "How many training rules (sikkhāpada) do we have, and in what are we to train?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow ten training rules for novices, and that novices train therein: abstinence (veramaṇī) from destroying living beings; abstinence from taking what is not given; abstinence from unchastity; abstinence from false speech; abstinence from fermented and distilled intoxicants, which are a basis for heedlessness; abstinence from eating at the wrong time; abstinence from dancing, singing, instrumental music, and watching unsuitable shows; abstinence from wearing garlands, scents, and unguents, and from occasions of adornment and beautification; abstinence from high and luxurious beds; abstinence from accepting gold and silver. Bhikkhus, I allow these ten training rules for novices, and that novices train in these."
