[135] Now at that time bhikkhus gave the going forth (pabbājenti) to a man whose hand had been cut off … they gave the going forth to one whose foot had been cut off. They gave the going forth to one whose hands and feet had been cut off. They gave the going forth to one whose ears had been cut off. They gave the going forth to one whose nose had been cut off. They gave the going forth to one whose ears and nose had been cut off. They gave the going forth to one whose fingers had been cut off. They gave the going forth to one whose thumbs had been cut off. They gave the going forth to one whose tendons had been severed. They gave the going forth to one with webbed hands, like a serpent's hood. They gave the going forth to a hunchback. They gave the going forth to a dwarf. They gave the going forth to one with a goitre. They gave the going forth to one branded with a criminal's mark. They gave the going forth to one scarred by whipping. They gave the going forth to a proclaimed criminal. They gave the going forth to one with elephantiasis. They gave the going forth to one afflicted with an evil disease. They gave the going forth to one who would disfigure the assembly. They gave the going forth to one blind in one eye. They gave the going forth to one with a crippled hand. They gave the going forth to one who is lame. They gave the going forth to one paralyzed on one side. They gave the going forth to one deprived of the postures (iriyāpatha). They gave the going forth to one weak from old age. They gave the going forth to one who is blind. They gave the going forth to one who is dumb. They gave the going forth to one who is deaf. They gave the going forth to one both blind and dumb. They gave the going forth to one both blind and deaf. They gave the going forth to one both dumb and deaf. They gave the going forth to one blind, dumb, and deaf.
They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one whose hand has been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose foot has been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose hands and feet have been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose ears have been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose nose has been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose ears and nose have been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose fingers have been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose thumbs have been cut off is not to be given the going forth; one whose tendons have been severed is not to be given the going forth; one with webbed hands, like a serpent's hood, is not to be given the going forth; a hunchback is not to be given the going forth; a dwarf is not to be given the going forth; one with a goitre is not to be given the going forth; one branded with a criminal's mark is not to be given the going forth; one scarred by whipping is not to be given the going forth; a proclaimed criminal is not to be given the going forth; one with elephantiasis is not to be given the going forth; one afflicted with an evil disease is not to be given the going forth; one who would disfigure the assembly is not to be given the going forth; one blind in one eye is not to be given the going forth; one with a crippled hand is not to be given the going forth; one who is lame is not to be given the going forth; one paralyzed on one side is not to be given the going forth; one deprived of the postures is not to be given the going forth; one weak from old age is not to be given the going forth; one who is blind is not to be given the going forth; one who is dumb is not to be given the going forth; one who is deaf is not to be given the going forth; one both blind and dumb is not to be given the going forth; one both blind and deaf is not to be given the going forth; one both dumb and deaf is not to be given the going forth; one blind, dumb, and deaf is not to be given the going forth. Whoever should give the going forth: an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
