[138] Now at that time two bhikkhus were traveling along a highroad in the Kosalan country. They came to a certain residence. There one bhikkhu fell sick. Then it occurred to that sick bhikkhu: "The Blessed One has laid down that one should not dwell without dependence (nissaya); yet I am one who ought to take dependence, and I am sick. How, then, should I proceed?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a bhikkhu who is sick, when he does not obtain dependence, to dwell without dependence."
Then it occurred to that bhikkhu who was attending the sick one: "The Blessed One has laid down that one should not dwell without dependence; yet I am one who ought to take dependence, and this bhikkhu is sick. How, then, should I proceed?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a bhikkhu who is attending the sick, when he does not obtain dependence and is being asked (to attend), to dwell without dependence."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was dwelling in the forest, and in that lodging he was at ease. Then it occurred to that bhikkhu: "The Blessed One has laid down that one should not dwell without dependence; yet I am one who ought to take dependence, and I dwell in the forest, and in this lodging I am at ease. How, then, should I proceed?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a forest-dwelling bhikkhu who discerns a comfortable abiding, when he does not obtain dependence, to dwell without dependence, (with the thought): 'When a suitable giver of dependence comes, I shall dwell in dependence on him.'"
