[156] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus authorized a boundary (sīmā) extending across a river. Bhikkhus coming to the Uposatha were swept away by the water, bowls were swept away, and robes were swept away. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, a boundary extending across a river should not be authorized; whoever should authorize one commits an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa). I allow you, bhikkhus, to authorize a boundary extending across a river of such a kind where there is a permanent ferry-boat or a permanent bridge."
