[172] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā), while reciting the Pātimokkha in the midst of the Saṅgha, deliberately did not make it heard. They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, the reciter of the Pātimokkha should not deliberately fail to make it heard. Whoever should not make it heard commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
Now at that time the Venerable Udāyi was the Saṅgha's reciter of the Pātimokkha, and he had a voice like a crow's. Then it occurred to the Venerable Udāyi: "It has been laid down by the Blessed One that the reciter of the Pātimokkha must make it heard; but I have a voice like a crow's. How, then, should I proceed?" They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, I allow the reciter of the Pātimokkha to make an effort, thinking, 'How may I make it heard?' For one who is making an effort, there is no offense."
