[183] Now at that time, on the day of the uposatha, relatives seized a certain bhikkhu. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, here relatives seize a bhikkhu on the day of the uposatha. Those relatives should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Please, venerable sirs, release this bhikkhu for a moment, until this bhikkhu has performed the uposatha.' If this can be obtained, that is good; if it cannot be obtained, those relatives should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Please, venerable sirs, stand aside for a moment, until this bhikkhu has given his purity (pārisuddhi).' If this can be obtained, that is good; if it cannot be obtained, those relatives should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Please, venerable sirs, take this bhikkhu outside the boundary (sīmā) for a moment, until the Saṅgha has performed the uposatha.' If this can be obtained, that is good; if it cannot be obtained, then the uposatha is not to be performed by an incomplete (vagga) Saṅgha; should it perform it, there is an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
"Bhikkhus, here kings seize a bhikkhu on the day of the uposatha … robbers seize him … scoundrels seize him … enemies of bhikkhus seize him. Those enemies of bhikkhus should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Please, venerable sirs, release this bhikkhu for a moment, until this bhikkhu has performed the uposatha.' If this can be obtained, that is good; if it cannot be obtained, those enemies of bhikkhus should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Please, venerable sirs, stand aside for a moment, until this bhikkhu has given his purity.' If this can be obtained, that is good; if it cannot be obtained, those enemies of bhikkhus should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Please, venerable sirs, take this bhikkhu outside the boundary for a moment, until the Saṅgha has performed the uposatha.' If this can be obtained, that is good; if it cannot be obtained, then the uposatha is not to be performed by an incomplete Saṅgha; should it perform it, there is an offence of wrong-doing."
