Vinayapiṭaka · Mahāvagga (1) · Vol. 4 · Section 218

[218] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu entered upon the rains residence (vassa) in the hollow of a tree. People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying, "Just like goblins." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one should not enter upon the rains residence in the hollow of a tree. Whoever should enter upon it commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)." Now at that time bhikkhus entered upon the rains residence in the fork of a tree. People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying, "Just like deer hunters." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one should not enter upon the rains residence in the fork of a tree. Whoever should enter upon it commits an offence of wrong-doing."
