[219] Now at that time bhikkhus entered upon the rains residence (vassa) in the open air. When it rained, they ran to the foot of a tree and to the eaves (nimbakosa). They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, the rains residence should not be entered upon in the open air; whoever should enter upon it thus commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
Now at that time bhikkhus without lodgings entered upon the rains residence; they were distressed by cold and by heat. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, the rains residence should not be entered upon by one without a lodging; whoever should enter upon it thus commits an offense of wrong-doing."
Now at that time bhikkhus entered upon the rains residence in a charnel hut. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "Just like corpse-burners!" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, the rains residence should not be entered upon in a charnel hut; whoever should enter upon it thus commits an offense of wrong-doing."
Now at that time bhikkhus entered upon the rains residence under an umbrella. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "Just like cowherds!" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, the rains residence should not be entered upon under an umbrella; whoever should enter upon it thus commits an offense of wrong-doing."
Now at that time bhikkhus entered upon the rains residence in a large storage jar. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "Just like sectarians (titthiyā)!" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, the rains residence should not be entered upon in a large storage jar; whoever should enter upon it thus commits an offense of wrong-doing."
