[51] Then it occurred to the Blessed One: "For a long time indeed this foolish man (moghapurisa) has been thinking thus: 'The Great Ascetic is of great psychic power, of great majesty; but assuredly he is not an arahant as I am.' What if I were to stir this matted-hair ascetic (jaṭila) with a sense of urgency?" Then the Blessed One said this to the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa: "Kassapa, you are neither an arahant, nor have you entered upon the path to arahantship; and you do not even have that practice (paṭipadā) by which you might become an arahant or one who has entered upon the path to arahantship." Then the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa, prostrating with his head at the feet of the Blessed One, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may I receive the going forth (pabbajjā) in the presence of the Blessed One; may I receive full ordination (upasampadā)."
"Kassapa, you are the leader, the guide, the foremost, the chief, the head of five hundred jaṭilas. Inform them first; they will do as they think fit."
Then the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa approached those jaṭilas, and having approached, he said this to those jaṭilas: "Sirs, I wish to live the holy life (brahmacariya) under the Great Ascetic. Let the venerable ones do as they think fit."
"Sir, for a long time we have had full confidence in the Great Ascetic. If you, sir, will live the holy life under the Great Ascetic, all of us likewise will live the holy life under the Great Ascetic."
Then those jaṭilas, having let their hair, their matted locks, their pole-loads of requisites, and their equipment for the fire sacrifice be carried away in the water, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, prostrating with their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, they said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may we receive the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One; may we receive full ordination."
"Come, bhikkhus," said the Blessed One. "Well proclaimed is the Dhamma. Live the holy life for the complete making of an end of suffering (dukkha)."
That very utterance was the full ordination of those venerable ones.
