[53] The jaṭila Gayākassapa saw the hair, the matted locks (jaṭā), the loads of ascetic requisites on carrying-poles (khārikāja), and the implements of the fire-sacrifice (aggihutta) being carried along in the water. On seeing this, it occurred to him: "May no harm have befallen my brothers!" He dispatched jaṭilas, saying, "Go and find out about my brothers," and he himself, together with two hundred jaṭilas, approached the venerable Uruvelakassapa. Having approached, he said to the venerable Uruvelakassapa: "Kassapa, is this indeed better?"
"Yes, friend, this is better."
Then those jaṭilas, having set adrift in the water their hair, their matted locks, their loads of requisites on carrying-poles, and their implements of the fire-sacrifice, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, they prostrated with their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may we receive the going forth (pabbajjā) in the presence of the Blessed One; may we receive the higher ordination (upasampadā)."
"Come, bhikkhus," said the Blessed One. "The Dhamma is well proclaimed. Live the holy life (brahmacariya) for the rightful making of an end of suffering (dukkha)."
That very utterance was the higher ordination of those venerable ones.
