[73] Now at that time, well-known clansmen of Magadha, one after another, were living the holy life under the Blessed One. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "The ascetic Gotama is practicing to bring about childlessness; the ascetic Gotama is practicing to bring about widowhood; the ascetic Gotama is practicing to bring about the breaking up of families. Now a thousand jaṭilas have been given the going-forth by him,¹ and these two hundred and fifty wanderers, followers of Sañjaya, have been given the going-forth; and these well-known clansmen of Magadha, one after another, are living the holy life under the ascetic Gotama." Moreover, on seeing bhikkhus, they reproached them with this verse:
"The Great Ascetic has come
to Giribbaja of the Magadhans;
having led away all of Sañjaya's followers,
whom now will he lead away?"
