[1171] A phenomenon (dhamma) associated with pleasant feeling (vedanā) is a condition, by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya), for a phenomenon associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling — object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya). Natural decisive-support: Depending on faith (saddhā) associated with pleasant feeling, one gives a gift (dāna) with a mind (citta) associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, undertakes virtue (sīla), performs the uposatha observance (uposatha-kamma); one arouses jhāna associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, arouses insight (vipassanā), arouses the path (magga), arouses superknowledge (abhiññā), arouses an attainment (samāpatti); one cherishes conceit (māna), grasps a view (diṭṭhi). Depending on virtue associated with pleasant feeling … on learning (suta), generosity (cāga), wisdom (paññā), lust (rāga), delusion (moha), conceit, view, aspiration (patthanā) … on body-consciousness (kāyaviññāṇa) accompanied by pleasure, one gives a gift with a mind associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. One arouses an attainment; with a mind associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling one takes what is not given, speaks falsehood, speaks divisively, speaks harshly, chatters frivolously, breaks into houses, carries off wholesale plunder, commits burglary of a single house, lies in wait on the highway, goes to another's wife, massacres a village, massacres a market town. Faith associated with pleasant feeling … virtue, learning, generosity, wisdom, lust, delusion, conceit, view, aspiration … body-consciousness accompanied by pleasure is a condition, by decisive-support condition, for faith associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, for virtue, learning, generosity, wisdom, lust, delusion, conceit, view, and aspiration, for body-consciousness accompanied by pleasure, and for the aggregates (khandhā) associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling.
