Abhidhammapiṭaka · Paṭṭhāna (3) · Vol. 42 · Section 261

[261] Conditioned by a material phenomenon (rūpī dhamma), a material phenomenon arises by root condition (hetu-paccaya): [conditioned by] one primary element (mahābhūta) … similar to the dependence chapter (paṭicca-vāra). Conditioned by a material phenomenon, an immaterial phenomenon (arūpī dhamma) arises by root condition: conditioned by the base (vatthu), the immaterial aggregates (arūpino khandhā) [arise]; at rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi). Conditioned by a material phenomenon, material and immaterial phenomena arise by root condition: conditioned by the base, the immaterial aggregates [arise]; conditioned by the primary elements, mind-originated matter (cittasamuṭṭhāna-rūpa) [arises]; at rebirth-linking. In this way the remaining questions should be analyzed in terms of occurrence (pavatti) and rebirth-linking.
