[271] A material phenomenon (rūpī dhammo) is a condition for an immaterial phenomenon (arūpī dhammo) by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya):
[One contemplates] the eye … the base (vatthu), the femininity faculty (itthindriya), the masculinity faculty (purisindriya), the life faculty (jīvitindriya), the water element (āpodhātu) … edible food (kabaḷīkāra āhāra) as impermanent … grief (domanassa) arises. One sees a form with the divine eye; one hears a sound with the divine ear element. The form base (rūpāyatana) is a condition for eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa) by object condition; the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) is a condition for body-consciousness (kāyaviññāṇa) by object condition. Material aggregates (rūpino khandhā) are a condition for the knowledge of supernormal power (iddhividha-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of recollection of past lives (pubbenivāsānussati-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of the future (anāgataṃsa-ñāṇa), and for adverting (āvajjanā), by object condition.
An immaterial phenomenon is a condition for an immaterial phenomenon by object condition:
A gift (dāna) … virtue (sīla) … the uposatha observance (uposathakamma) … one reviews it; one reviews what was formerly well practised; from jhāna …; noble ones (ariyā), from the path (magga) … review the fruit (phala). Nibbāna is a condition for change-of-lineage (gotrabhū), for cleansing (vodāna), for the path, for the fruit, and for adverting, by object condition. Noble ones [review] defilements (kilesa) that have been abandoned … defilements that have been suppressed … formerly … [One contemplates] the immaterial aggregates as impermanent … grief arises. With the knowledge of others' minds (cetopariya-ñāṇa) one knows the mind (citta) of one endowed with an immaterial mind. The sphere of infinite space (ākāsānañcāyatana) [is a condition] for the sphere of infinite consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana) for the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana); and immaterial aggregates are a condition for the knowledge of supernormal power, for the knowledge of others' minds, for the knowledge of recollection of past lives, for the knowledge of beings' faring according to their kamma (yathākammūpaga-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of the future, and for adverting, by object condition.
