[461] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is both clinging (upādāna) and subject to clinging (upādāniya) is a condition, by root condition (hetu-paccaya), for a phenomenon that is both clinging and subject to clinging: namely, roots (hetū) that are both clinging and subject to clinging are a condition, by root condition, for the associated (sampayuttaka) clingings.
A phenomenon that is both clinging and subject to clinging is a condition, by root condition, for a phenomenon that is subject to clinging but not clinging: namely, roots that are both clinging and subject to clinging are a condition, by root condition, for the associated aggregates (khandha) and for forms originated by mind (cittasamuṭṭhāna-rūpa).
The nine questions (pañhā) are similar to the clinging dyad (upādāna-duka), without difference.
