[139] Now at that time robes of various kinds, both fine and coarse, arose for the Saṅgha. Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "What kind of robe has been allowed by the Blessed One, and what kind has not been allowed?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow six kinds of robe-cloth: linen (khoma), cotton (kappāsika), silk (koseyya), wool (kambala), hemp (sāṇa), and coarse hemp-cloth (bhaṅga)."
Now at that time those bhikkhus who accepted robes from householders (gahapaticīvara), being scrupulous, did not accept rag-robes (paṃsukūla), thinking: "Only one kind of robe has been allowed by the Blessed One, not two." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow one who accepts robes from householders to accept rag-robes as well; and, bhikkhus, I praise contentment with both of these."
