[16] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus, thinking, "High and grand beds (uccāsayanamahāsayanāni) have been prohibited by the Blessed One," used great hides — a lion's hide, a tiger's hide, a leopard's hide. These were cut to the size of a bed and cut to the size of a bench; they were spread inside upon the bed and spread outside upon the bed; they were spread inside upon the bench and spread outside upon the bench. People wandering on a tour of the dwellings, seeing this, complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "Just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures!" They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Bhikkhus, great hides are not to be used — a lion's hide, a tiger's hide, a leopard's hide. Whoever should use one: an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
