[17] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus, thinking, "Large hides have been prohibited by the Blessed One," used cow hides. These were cut to the size of a bed and cut to the size of a chair; they were spread within the bed and spread outside the bed; they were spread within the chair and spread outside the chair.
And a certain evil bhikkhu was a frequenter of the family (kulupaka) of a certain evil lay follower. Then that evil bhikkhu, having dressed in the morning and taken his bowl and robe, approached the dwelling of that evil lay follower; having approached, he sat down on the seat prepared for him. Then that evil lay follower approached that evil bhikkhu; having approached and paid homage to that evil bhikkhu, he sat down to one side. Now at that time that evil lay follower had a calf—young, handsome, good to look upon, pleasing, dappled like a leopard cub. Then that evil bhikkhu gazed intently at that calf. Then that evil lay follower said this to that evil bhikkhu: "Venerable sir, why does the master gaze so intently at this calf?" "Friend, I have need of this calf's hide." Then that evil lay follower, having killed that calf and flayed off the hide, gave it to that evil bhikkhu. Then that evil bhikkhu, concealing that hide with his outer robe (saṅghāṭi), went off. Then the cow, longing for her calf, followed close behind that evil bhikkhu. The bhikkhus said this: "Friend, why is this cow following close behind you?" "Friends, I too do not know why this cow is following close behind me." Now at that time the outer robe of that evil bhikkhu was smeared with blood. The bhikkhus said this: "But, friend, what has happened to this outer robe of yours?" Then that evil bhikkhu reported the matter to the bhikkhus. "But, friend, did you incite him to the killing of living beings?" "Even so, friends." Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … took offense, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can a bhikkhu incite someone to the killing of living beings? Has not the killing of living beings been censured by the Blessed One in many ways, and abstention from the killing of living beings been praised?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
