[171] Now at that time the Venerable Revata sent a robe in the hand of a certain bhikkhu to the Venerable Sāriputta, saying: "Give this robe to the Elder." Then that bhikkhu, while on the way, took that robe on trust (vissāsa) with the Venerable Revata. Then the Venerable Revata, having met with the Venerable Sāriputta, asked: "Venerable sir, I sent a robe to the Elder. Has that robe arrived?"
"Friend, I have not seen that robe."
Then the Venerable Revata said to that bhikkhu: "Friend, I sent a robe in the venerable one's hand for the Elder. Where is that robe?"
"Venerable sir, I took that robe on trust with you."
They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu sends a robe in the hand of a bhikkhu, saying: 'Give this robe to so-and-so.' If, while on the way, he takes it on trust with the one who sends it, it is properly taken; if he takes it on trust with the one to whom it is sent, it is wrongly taken.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu sends a robe in the hand of a bhikkhu, saying: 'Give this robe to so-and-so.' If, while on the way, he takes it on trust with the one to whom it is sent, it is wrongly taken; if he takes it on trust with the one who sends it, it is properly taken.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu sends a robe in the hand of a bhikkhu, saying: 'Give this robe to so-and-so.' If, while on the way, he hears: 'The one who sent it has died,' and he determines it as that one's robe of the deceased, it is properly determined; if he takes it on trust with the one to whom it is sent, it is wrongly taken.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu sends a robe in the hand of a bhikkhu, saying: 'Give this robe to so-and-so.' If, while on the way, he hears: 'The one to whom it is sent has died,' and he determines it as that one's robe of the deceased, it is wrongly determined; if he takes it on trust with the one who sends it, it is properly taken.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu sends a robe in the hand of a bhikkhu, saying: 'Give this robe to so-and-so.' If, while on the way, he hears: 'Both have died,' and he determines it as the robe of the deceased belonging to the one who sent it, it is properly determined; if he determines it as the robe of the deceased belonging to the one to whom it was sent, it is wrongly determined.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu sends a robe in the hand of a bhikkhu, saying: 'I give this robe to so-and-so.' If, while on the way, he takes it on trust with the one who sends it, it is wrongly taken; if he takes it on trust with the one to whom it is sent, it is properly taken.
