[170] Now at that time bhikkhus who had completed the rains residence, before robe-cloth had arisen, departed, disrobed, died, admitted to being novices (sāmaṇera), admitted to having disavowed the training, admitted to having committed a final offense (antimavatthu), admitted to being insane, admitted to being deranged in mind, admitted to being overwhelmed by painful feeling, admitted to being suspended for not seeing an offense, admitted to being suspended for not making amends for an offense, admitted to being suspended for not relinquishing an evil view, admitted to being paṇḍakas, admitted to being persons living in communion by theft (theyyasaṃvāsaka), admitted to having gone over to another sect (titthiyapakkantaka), admitted to being animals, admitted to being matricides, admitted to being patricides, admitted to being murderers of arahants, admitted to being violators of bhikkhunīs, admitted to being schismatics, admitted to being shedders of blood, admitted to being hermaphrodites (ubhatobyañjanaka). They informed the Blessed One of this matter.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu who has completed the rains residence departs before robe-cloth has arisen. If there is a suitable recipient, it should be given.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu who has completed the rains residence, before robe-cloth has arisen, disrobes, dies, admits to being a novice, admits to having disavowed the training, admits to having committed a final offense. The Saṅgha is the owner.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu who has completed the rains residence, before robe-cloth has arisen, admits to being insane, admits to being deranged in mind, admits to being overwhelmed by painful feeling, admits to being suspended for not seeing an offense, admits to being suspended for not making amends for an offense, admits to being suspended for not relinquishing an evil view. "Bhikkhus, here, before robe-cloth has arisen for bhikkhus who have completed the rains residence, the Saṅgha splits. There, people give water to one faction and give robe-cloth to that very same faction, saying, 'We give it to the Saṅgha.' It belongs to the Saṅgha alone.
"Bhikkhus, here, before robe-cloth has arisen for bhikkhus who have completed the rains residence, the Saṅgha splits. There, people give water to one faction and give robe-cloth to the other faction, saying, 'We give it to the faction.' It belongs to that faction alone.
"Bhikkhus, here, before robe-cloth has arisen for bhikkhus who have completed the rains residence, the Saṅgha splits. There, people give water to one faction and give robe-cloth to that very same faction, saying, 'We give it to the faction.' It belongs to that faction alone.
"Bhikkhus, here, when robe-cloth has arisen for bhikkhus who have completed the rains residence but has not been divided, the Saṅgha splits. It should be divided equally among all."
