[177] Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of formal acts (kamma): a formal act contrary to the Dhamma performed by an incomplete assembly (adhammena vaggakammaṃ), a formal act contrary to the Dhamma performed by a united assembly (adhammena samaggakammaṃ), a formal act in accordance with the Dhamma performed by an incomplete assembly (dhammena vaggakammaṃ), and a formal act in accordance with the Dhamma performed by a united assembly (dhammena samaggakammaṃ).
Herein, bhikkhus, as to the formal act contrary to the Dhamma performed by an incomplete assembly: this act, bhikkhus, because it is contrary to the Dhamma and because the assembly is incomplete, is reversible (kuppa) and not fit to stand. Bhikkhus, such an act should not be performed, nor has such an act been allowed by me.
Herein, bhikkhus, as to the formal act contrary to the Dhamma performed by a united assembly: this act, bhikkhus, because it is contrary to the Dhamma, is reversible and not fit to stand. Bhikkhus, such an act should not be performed, nor has such an act been allowed by me.
Herein, bhikkhus, as to the formal act in accordance with the Dhamma performed by an incomplete assembly: this act, bhikkhus, because the assembly is incomplete, is reversible and not fit to stand. Bhikkhus, such an act should not be performed, nor has such an act been allowed by me.
Herein, bhikkhus, as to the formal act in accordance with the Dhamma performed by a united assembly: this act, bhikkhus, because it is in accordance with the Dhamma and because the assembly is united, is irreversible and fit to stand. Bhikkhus, such an act should be performed, and such an act has been allowed by me.
Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus: "We shall perform such formal acts as are in accordance with the Dhamma and by a united assembly."
