[178] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus performed formal acts (kamma) of this kind: they performed an act by an incomplete assembly (vaggakamma) contrary to the Dhamma; they performed an act by a united assembly (samaggakamma) contrary to the Dhamma; they performed an act by an incomplete assembly in accordance with the Dhamma; they performed an act by an incomplete assembly with a semblance of the Dhamma (dhammapaṭirūpaka); they performed an act by a united assembly with a semblance of the Dhamma; they performed an act defective in the motion (ñatti) though complete in the proclamation (anussāvana); they performed an act defective in the proclamation though complete in the motion; they performed an act defective both in the motion and in the proclamation; they performed an act apart from the Dhamma; they performed an act apart from the Vinaya; they performed an act apart from the Teacher's instruction; and they performed even an act that had been protested against — one not in accordance with the Dhamma, subject to reversal (kuppa), unfit to stand.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus perform such acts — perform an act by an incomplete assembly contrary to the Dhamma … perform even an act that has been protested against, not in accordance with the Dhamma, subject to reversal, unfit to stand?"
Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Is it true, bhikkhus, that the group-of-six bhikkhus perform such acts — perform an act by an incomplete assembly contrary to the Dhamma … perform even an act that has been protested against, not in accordance with the Dhamma, subject to reversal, unfit to stand?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them … Having rebuked them and given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the bhikkhus:
