[43] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu had been bitten by a snake. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the four great filths (mahāvikaṭa) to be given: dung, urine, ash, and clay." Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "Are these exempt from being formally received, or must they be formally received?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow that when an attendant who makes things allowable (kappiyakāraka) is present, one have them formally received; when no such attendant is present, one may take them oneself and consume them."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu had drunk poison. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow dung to be given to drink." Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "Is it exempt from being formally received, or must it be formally received?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow that what one takes even while producing it — the formal receiving is thereby done; it need not be formally received again."
